Why I Became an Insurance Broker

When people ask how I got into the insurance industry, they're often surprised by the answer.

I didn't grow up wanting to sell insurance. In fact, my career began in a completely different place.

For more than eight years, I worked in operations and human resources, where one of my responsibilities was helping employees understand their benefits. Every year during open enrollment, I watched people try to make important decisions about their health insurance—often without truly understanding the options in front of them.

They weren't asking complicated questions.

They wanted to know things like:

  • Which plan is better for my family?

  • Why is one plan cheaper than another?

  • What does my deductible actually mean?

  • Will my doctor be covered?

  • Am I making the right decision?

What struck me wasn't that people didn't care about their benefits. It was that the information they were given often left them with more questions than answers.

Insurance Is Complicated, But It Doesn't Have to Be

The more I worked with employees, the more I realized that insurance has a language all its own.

Deductibles. Coinsurance. Out-of-pocket maximums. Formularies. Networks.

If you don't work in the industry every day, it's easy to feel overwhelmed.

I remember thinking, "If people are struggling this much to understand their coverage, there has to be a better way to explain it." That thought never really left me.

From HR to Helping Families Every Day

Eventually, I decided to take everything I had learned in HR and employee benefits and apply it in a different way.

Today, I have the privilege of helping individuals, families, Medicare beneficiaries, and small businesses navigate insurance decisions with confidence.

What I enjoy most isn't filling out applications or comparing plan benefits.

It's seeing the moment when someone says, "That finally makes sense."

Because once people understand their options, they can make decisions with confidence instead of confusion.

Why I Chose to Be an Independent Broker

One of the best decisions I made was becoming an independent insurance broker rather than working for a single insurance company.

Being independent allows me to focus on finding the right solution for each person's situation, rather than trying to fit everyone into the same plan.

It also means I can help with a variety of insurance needs, including:

  • Individual and family health insurance

  • Medicare

  • Employer-sponsored benefits

  • Dental and vision insurance

  • Supplemental coverage

  • Life insurance

  • Disability insurance

Every client has a different story, different priorities, and different concerns. I believe their insurance should reflect that.

Education Comes Before Enrollment

If you've spent any time reading my blog, you've probably noticed a common theme.

I spend a lot of time explaining insurance.

That's intentional.

I believe an informed client makes better decisions than a pressured client.

Whether someone chooses to work with me or not, I want them to leave every conversation with a better understanding of how their insurance works.

That's why I write educational articles, create free resources, speak at community events, and volunteer my time answering questions whenever I can.

Insurance shouldn't feel intimidating. It should feel understandable.

More Than Just Policies

One of the things I enjoy most about this career is building relationships.

Life doesn't stand still after you enroll in a plan.

People change jobs. They retire. They get married. They welcome children and grandchildren. Businesses grow. Employees come and go.

Insurance needs change right along with life's milestones.

I don't see my role as simply helping someone enroll in a policy.

I see my role as being a resource they can come back to whenever life changes or questions arise.

Thank You for Being Here

Whether you found my website while researching Medicare, comparing health insurance options, learning about employee benefits, or simply trying to understand how insurance works, I'm glad you're here.

My goal has always been simple:

To make insurance less confusing and help people feel confident in the decisions they make.

At the end of the day, insurance isn't really about policies.

It's about protecting people, supporting families, and helping businesses take care of their employees.

I'm grateful to do work that allows me to make a difference in all three.
