Amanda's Corner: Why Education Comes Before Enrollment

One of the questions I'm asked from time to time is,

"Why do you spend so much time explaining everything?"

The answer is simple.

Because I believe you should understand your insurance before you choose it.

That may sound obvious, but unfortunately, that's not always how people experience the insurance process.

Insurance Can Feel Overwhelming

For many people, insurance is something they only think about a few times a year.

Maybe it's during open enrollment.

Maybe it's when they turn 65.

Maybe it's after changing jobs or starting a business.

Suddenly they're faced with unfamiliar terms like deductibles, coinsurance, formularies, provider networks, and out-of-pocket maximums—and expected to make an important financial decision in just a few days.

It's no wonder people feel overwhelmed.

I don't think anyone should feel like they're guessing when it comes to protecting their health or their family's financial well-being.

My Goal Isn't to Tell You What to Choose

One of the biggest misconceptions about working with an insurance broker is that we're here to tell people which plan to buy.

That's never been my approach.

My goal is to help you understand your options so you can make a decision you're comfortable with.

Sometimes there are two or three plans that could work well.

We'll talk through the differences, the trade-offs, and what each option means for your situation.

At the end of the conversation, I want you to feel confident in your decision—not because I told you what to do, but because you understand why you're choosing it.

An Educated Client Is My Favorite Client

One of my favorite moments is when someone stops me in the middle of an appointment and says,

"I finally understand this."

That's a win.

Not because it means we've found the perfect plan, but because we've replaced confusion with confidence.

I love when clients ask questions.

In fact, I hope they do.

The more questions you ask, the more confident you'll feel about your coverage.

Education Doesn't End After Enrollment

Helping someone enroll in a policy is only one part of my job.

Questions come up throughout the year.

A prescription costs more than expected.

A doctor leaves the network.

Someone receives an Explanation of Benefits they don't understand.

A family member becomes eligible for Medicare.

Life changes.

Insurance changes.

Questions happen.

I want my clients to know they don't have to figure those things out alone.

That's Why I Write

If you've spent any time on my website, you've probably noticed there are a lot of educational articles.

I write about Medicare, health insurance, dental plans, employee benefits, voluntary benefits, and many of the questions I hear from clients every week.

I also create free resources like my Life & Legacy Planning Guide and Emergency Information Organizer because I believe information is valuable.

My hope is that whether someone becomes a client or simply reads one article that helps them better understand their insurance, they've walked away with something useful.

Insurance Should Be Explained—Not Sold

If I had to summarize my philosophy in one sentence, it would be this:

Insurance should be explained—not sold.

I don't believe people should feel pressured into making decisions they don't understand.

I believe they deserve someone who will take the time to answer questions, explain the options, and be honest about the advantages and disadvantages of each choice.

When people understand their coverage, they make better decisions.

And when they make better decisions, they're more likely to feel confident when they actually need to use their insurance.

Thank You for Learning Along With Me

Whether you're a longtime client, someone who recently found my website, or you're simply trying to learn a little more about how insurance works, thank you for being here.

I know insurance isn't always the most exciting topic.

But it's one of the most important.

If I can make it a little less confusing, a little less intimidating, and a little easier to understand, then I've accomplished exactly what I set out to do.

And if you ever have a question, don't hesitate to ask.

After all, that's what I'm here for.
