Amanda's Corner: The Best Insurance Appointment Is the One Where You Don't Buy Anything

That title probably sounds strange coming from an insurance broker.
After all, isn't the goal of every appointment to enroll someone in a plan?
Not necessarily.
Over the years, I've had appointments where the best advice I could give someone was...
"Keep what you have."
Sometimes that's exactly the right answer.
My Job Isn't to Sell You Something
One of the biggest misconceptions about insurance is that every conversation ends with someone buying a policy.
In my office, that's simply not true.
There have been times when someone came in expecting to change plans, only to discover they already had coverage that fit their needs well.
I've met with Medicare beneficiaries whose employer retirement coverage was an excellent option.
I've talked with families who assumed they needed a new Marketplace plan when updating the one they already had made more sense.
I've even reviewed dental plans and recommended that someone keep the policy they already owned.
Could I have enrolled them in something different? Probably.
Would it have been the right thing to do? No.
Sometimes Peace of Mind Is the Best Outcome
One of my favorite appointments didn't end with an application.
It ended with relief.
A client came in convinced they had made a mistake choosing their insurance.
After reviewing everything together, we discovered they had actually selected a plan that fit their situation very well.
They didn't need a new policy.
They simply needed someone to explain why the one they had was working exactly as intended.
They left without buying anything.
They also left feeling confident.
That's a successful appointment in my book.
Insurance Reviews Shouldn't Come With Strings Attached
One of the reasons I offer complimentary insurance reviews is because I believe people deserve to understand what they have.
Sometimes that review uncovers opportunities to improve coverage or lower costs.
Sometimes it confirms they're already in a good place.
Either outcome is valuable.
If you leave my office with more confidence than when you walked in, we've accomplished something worthwhile.
Relationships Matter More Than Transactions
Insurance isn't a one-time purchase.
Life changes.
People retire.
Children grow up.
Businesses expand.
Health needs evolve.
I would much rather build a relationship based on honesty than make a recommendation that isn't in someone's best interest.
Ironically, I've found that approach leads to stronger relationships and more referrals over time.
People remember when someone puts their interests first.
That's the Kind of Broker I Want to Be
When I opened my agency, I didn't set out to become the broker who sold the most policies.
I wanted to become the broker people felt comfortable calling when they had questions.
Sometimes that conversation leads to new coverage.
Sometimes it leads to keeping exactly what they already have.
Either way, my goal is the same: to help people make informed decisions with confidence.
Because at the end of the day, doing what's right for the client will always matter more than making a sale.
